  4. I had to wait seven months for an initial response, and another six after I made the revisions, and I can’t remember how many more months before they published it. And, I had to send several e-mails to get any feedback on the status of my article.

Apart from the time factor (very slow) it was a good experience. They gave me good feedback with an opportunity for revisions.

  7. Does anyone know if the turn-around time has improved since this comment in 2012? I have a manuscript that is just under the 7k word limit, and I was thinking about sending it to HJ.

  8. Based on my experience, they are still slow to respond. It has been nearly eight months for me and I am still waiting for a response. When other journals respond within two months, this is pretty unacceptable. If I hear nothing from them by the 9-month mark I am withdrawing my manuscript.

  10. After ten months of waiting, I officially withdrew my manuscript from this journal last night so I could submit it elsewhere. I fault myself for not heeding the comments here, and for deciding the wait was worth the possibility of publishing in a journal that is held in such esteem in our discipline.

Luckily, I am tenured. No decision about my future was not riding on this particular publication. I would NOT recommend anyone on the tenure-track send anything here, unless he or she has already satisfied the requirements for tenure without the manuscript submitted there.

To their credit, back in August I sent an email from their new editor inquiring about my manuscript and, unlike his predecessor, he responded within 24 hours informing me that he would look into it. A week later, he wrote again informing me that the manuscript was still under review. This suggests to me that the reader (whoever he or she is) is hanging on to the manuscript. It is always possible that the new editor will be able to turn this journal around but, honestly, the first thing he needs to do is find new readers. Otherwise, nobody will send anything there anymore. it is not as if there aren’t people in our discipline who can provide timely, meaningful feedback (I know, because every other journal I have worked with has had readers that fit this description).

  11. I submitted an article to this journal in early Nov and heard back in exactly one month. Emails I sent in before the submission were answered the same day. Things must be turning around for this joural. So far, the experience has been ideal.
