Latin American Literary Review is a scholarly journal devoted to the literature of Latin America and Brazil. It is published semiannually in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Since its appearance in the Fall of 1972, the magazine has been very well received, and has aroused national and international interest. It is directed by Dr. Yvette Miller, professor of Spanish.

Recognized by Library Journal as “a most important development for Latin American literature,” Latin American Literary Review’s purpose has been to provide the academic community with a firsthand interpretation of Latin American literature and culture through feature essays and reviews of recent literary works.

Bringing to its readers the most recent writing of some of the leading scholars and critics in the fields of Hispanic and Portuguese literature, the Latin American Literary Review is of interest to all libraries and institutions of higher learning, and especially to all departments of English, Modern Languages, Latin American Studies, and Comparative Literature.

  1. I had a very good experience with the LALR. My original submission was misplaced, I think, but once I resubmitted the manuscript they were very responsive and quick. It only took about a month for comments to get back to me, and less than six months until publication.

  2. I had an excellent experience with the LALR. They responded with complete comments within the established timeframe. I received final word on the revised resubmission within two weeks, and publication came shortly after.

  3. I had an amazing experience with the LALR. Great comments from reviewers. I wish all journals were this efficient and professional.

  4. I am thinking of submitting to this journal, does anyone find it strange that submission is in hard copy via regular mail, (an involves including a self addressed stamped envelope) and there is not even an email address listed to contact on their website? Are all possible comments and revisions done via snail mail?

  5. No idea how to rate as article was submitted nearly a year ago with no feedback in either direction. Email inquiring as to the status of the submission was responded to two months after it was sent, with no decision or explanation. Eternally under review, hoping this was not a waste of time, as the tenure clock marches on.

  6. Same here. Submitted an article almost 7 months ago. No feedback, no update, no explanation till now. I wonder if the office still exists…

  7. Same here. I do not recommend this journal at all right now. Maybe it used to be very good but now they do not answer emails, have a very outdated website, and really bad distribution. I have a forthcoming article there and I NEVER got any feedback whatsoever. Just that it had been accepted (about a year after submission, so be very patient…). Now it´s been in press for at least 2 years and I have called, written, etc to at least know in what volume it will appear (and whether the journal still exists) and only got a (vague) reply 4 months later. I do not recommend it at all.

  8. I received an rejection after nearly a year and SEVERAL emails. The rejection itself was sent via snail mail, rather insulting and contained zero actual comments that could be used to improve upon the article. Treatment shows little regard for contributors and junior scholars who need to publish in a somewhat timely matter.

  9. Their website says that they will confirm receipt after receiving both the hardcopy and the electronic version. After sending several emails to the editor requesting that they do so, to no avail, finally I called. Their voicemail was full, so I was unable to leave a message. I decided to withdraw my article for consideration at this journal, because it did not seem like it would be a fruitful experience. Based on the comments on this page regarding scholars’ latest experiences with the LALR, I think I made a good choice.

  10. I submitted 12+ months ago. Have sent two e-mails inquiring about the status. No response. Will give it 6 more months prior to withdrawing.

    • The LALR is undergoing a major overhaul after a period of somewhat chaotic inactivity.e Soon, things should be back on track, and more in line with the 21st century technology and expectations. It is a journal with a strong tradition and legacy, so let’s hope it will be back in business soon. I would wait with new submissions until things are realigned

        Dear Anonymous

I am looking for any contact person for LALRP. Yvette Miller has passed away and the translators of a book published through LALRP are disparate to contact someone else. The distributor who holds the copies of the books is saying they will be destroyed, so it is imperative that we find Someone to talk with. Any commments will be appreciated

  11. I submitted an article that was accepted with minor revisions and the entire process took just over a year – which I was happy with. However, this was in late 2012-2013… my article was finally published in a 2014 issue, however I cannot locate this issue anywhere and it does not appear on any library databases (MLA, JSTOR, etc). I am very frustrated that all I have to prove this publication is the final “proof” copy that they journal sent me and, to my knowledge, it is impossible for anyone to find this “published” article. Very frustrating – I would not recommend submitting now, especially after reading the above, more recent comments (post-2013).

    • I saw a new facebook page of the Latin American Literary Review (the journal) which is now headed by Debra Castillo. Not sure about the book press.
